Applied AI Engineer - Agents & Local Models
Playground Dev is the software engineering company in Playground Group. We build AI systems for clients and for the group itself: agent flows, LLM integrations, internal tooling, and the engineering around them that makes everything hold up in production.
We're in a growth phase and expanding the team across backend, fullstack and AI engineering. This opening is the AI engineering part of that.
The role
You'd join our in-house client and group deliveries as an engineer. Some days are pure code. Others start with a messy, half-defined problem and end with the first version of a plan.
The hard problems we're hiring for sit at the deeper end of the stack: running local models in production, context management for long-running agents, evaluation that actually tells you something, and the architecture decisions that come with all of it. If your experience so far is mostly calling hosted APIs, this role goes further than that.
We're a small enough team that good arguments win, so you'll have a lot of influence over how we do AI here. Part of the job is also teaching: helping other engineers understand how these systems behave in practice.
Who we're looking for
A few years of experience, comfortable across the stack. You've shipped AI-enabled systems with actual users, and you know what breaks. LLM integrations, agents, RAG, evals, knowledge graphs: you don't need to have done all of it, but you should be able to design and build most of it on your own.
You can drive things forward without anyone holding your hand. Low ego. We have no room for lone wolves who hoard knowledge.
If you've built something weird and AI-shaped on your own time, we want to hear about it.
How we work
Three types of engagements. This role sits mainly in the first two:
In-house platform deliveries for group-wide initiatives
Team-based client solutions with shared ownership
Consulting engineering for clients who need extra technical strength
AI is part of our daily workflow, from delivery process to how we learn and solve problems. We spend real time understanding new tools and learning from each other, and the bar is high.
You won't sit in a narrow box. You'll collaborate with backend, fullstack and AI-focused engineers across deliveries, and put your skills where they create the most value.
Things we've built
A few examples from past deliveries, to give you a feel for the range:
System mapping and automated migration of large enterprise codebases, using agents we built ourselves
Due diligence tooling for VC firms: automated analysis of a startup's tech stack, architecture and risks
Real-time anomaly detection that catches deviations before a human would
Chatbot products for global brands launching new products
Report pipelines that plug into Word and turn real estate market data into finished analysis
What you'd work on is the next wave: the platform and team deliveries we're scaling into now.
